How to play 2048
Slide every tile up, down, left or right on the 4×4 board. Equal neighbors meet to make one larger number: 2+2 makes 4, 4+4 makes 8, and so on. Each new merged number adds that value to your score. A tile can merge only once in a slide; four 2s become two 4s, not one 8.
Make space for the next tile
The game starts with two tiles. Every move that changes the board adds exactly one new tile in a random empty square: a 2 with 90% probability or a 4 with 10%. A slide that changes nothing adds no tile, score or move. The game ends when no empty square or equal neighboring pair remains.
Reach 2048, then keep going
Making a 2048 tile pauses for a win panel. Keep going continues the same score and board toward 4096 and larger numbers. If the winning move leaves a blocked board after its new tile, one combined panel records the win and explains that no moves remain. It does not offer an unusable Continue button or count another completed game. This is a small presentation improvement to the original game.
Simple controls
Swipe straight across the board, use the four large arrow buttons, or focus the board and use arrow keys, WASD or HJKL. U undoes the last slide; P pauses; R opens a confirmation for Restart. New game always asks before replacing the board. Small-screen play opens the immersive game view on a valid move; Back to page restores your previous scroll position. Pause hides the board and stops active time. Sound starts off.
One Undo and an honest restart
Undo restores one previous slide, including the exact random stream. Repeating that same move produces the same next tile. There is no Redo or unlimited rewind. Restart repeats the same seed and starting tiles as practice. New game creates a new attempt. Undo and Restart stay recorded across reloads; the attempt keeps its first win or loss even if you replay it or continue beyond 2048.
Your best and eight stars
Stars mark actual highest tiles 16, 64, 256, 1024, 2048 and 4096, plus three different fresh games finished with at least 512 points and beating a saved pre-game best of at least 512 without Undo or Restart. Tile milestones and best score survive Undo. Continuing a win, restarting, reloading or finishing the same attempt again never adds another completed run. Your original pre-game best stays fixed through resume.
Saved in this browser
Your current board, full legal move history, active time, best score, sound preference and achievements save when browser storage is available. A visible warning explains when saving fails; keep that tab open. No account or online leaderboard is required. Very long Continue play uses safe finite numeric bounds: tiles stop merging at 2^52 and the score is capped at the largest safe multiple of 4.
