    How to play Alphabet 2048

Slide every tile up, down, left or right on the 4 × 4 board. Matching letters merge into the next letter: A + A makes B, B + B makes C, and J + J makes K. Your first goal is K. A tile merges only once in each slide; four A tiles make two B tiles rather than one C.

Letters on the board, numbers in the score

    Each letter represents a doubled numeric value: A is 2, B is 4, C is 8, and K is 2048. A merge adds the new numeric value to your score. A + A therefore earns 4 points, B + B earns 8, and J + J earns 2048. The score is not an alphabet-rank count.

Keep room for the next tile

Two random tiles start the game. After each slide that changes the board, exactly one new tile appears in a random empty square: A with 90% probability or B with 10%. A move that changes nothing adds no tile, score or move. No empty cell or equal neighboring letter means no moves remain.

    K is a beginning

Reaching K opens a win panel. Keep going continues the same board, score, random stream and attempt. If that winning slide leaves a blocked board after its new tile, one combined panel records the win and explains that no moves remain. It offers Review or New rather than an unusable Continue.

Our original display keeps every later tile labeled: L, M, N through Z, then AA through AZ. AZ represents 2^52, the safe tile ceiling. This extended labeling is our explicit presentation choice. K remains the goal, not Z or AZ.

    Simple controls

Swipe straight across the board, use the four large arrow buttons, or focus the board and use arrow keys, WASD or HJKL. U undoes one slide; P pauses; R opens a confirmation for a same-start practice Restart. New always asks before replacing the board. A valid move opens the immersive game view on a small screen; Back to page restores your previous scroll position. Pause hides the board and stops active time. Sound starts off.

One Undo and an honest restart

Undo restores the previous slide, score and exact random stream. Repeating that same move produces the same next tile. There is no Redo or unlimited rewind. Restart repeats the starting seed as practice; New creates a fresh attempt. The first result, genuine letter milestones and Undo/Restart history survive replay and reload. Continuing a win or later losing never counts another completed run for that attempt.

    Eight stars, saved progress

Reach D, F, H, J, K and L for six letter stars. Finish three different fresh games with at least 512 points, and beat a saved pre-game best of at least 512 without Undo or Restart for the other two. Highest-letter progress and best score survive Undo. Your original pre-game best remains fixed when resuming.

Your board, full legal history, active time, best score, sound preference and achievements save in this browser when storage is available. A visible warning explains a saving failure; keep that tab open. Very long Continue play uses finite safe values: equal AZ tiles do not merge further and score saturates at the largest safe multiple of 4. There is no account or online leaderboard.
