What is the Dinosaur Game?

The Dinosaur Game is the pixel-art endless runner that pops up in Google Chrome whenever your internet connection drops out. Millions of people first met the little T-Rex by accident, waiting for a page to load, and ended up hooked on the game itself. This independent adaptation keeps the original Chromium runner’s familiar mechanics, with our own mobile controls, full-screen presentation, and high-score board. No download or sign-up is required.

The goal is simple: keep your T-Rex running for as long as possible, jumping over cacti and ducking under pterodactyls, while the game speeds up the longer you survive. It's easy to learn in five seconds and hard to put down after that.

How to play

  • Jump: press Space or the Up arrow key.
  • Duck: press and hold the Down arrow key to slide under low-flying obstacles.
  • On mobile or tablet: tap the game or the Jump button to jump. Hold Duck to stay low.
  • Restart: once you crash, press Space or tap Play again to start a new run. Press P or use Pause to take a break; Back to page leaves the full-screen view.

Watch out for pterodactyls — they fly at three different heights, so sometimes you need to jump and sometimes you need to duck. The game also has a day-and-night cycle: the further you run, the more often the screen flips to a dark, inverted color scheme, which makes obstacles a little harder to read.

Tips to get a higher score

  1. Jump a little earlier than feels natural — the T-Rex's hitbox is smaller than it looks, but so is your reaction time once the game speeds up.
  2. Stay calm during the night cycle. The obstacles haven't changed, only the colors have.
  3. Use short, precise taps on the jump key instead of holding it down, so you land in time to react to the next obstacle.
  4. On a keyboard, resting your fingers on both the Up and Down arrows at once cuts down your reaction time significantly.

Why do people love this game so much?

Part of the appeal is exactly how little it asks of you. There's no tutorial, no menu, no account, no ads interrupting a run — just an instant restart and a high score daring you to beat it. It's become one of the most-played browser games in the world simply by being the thing millions of people stumbled into while they were stuck offline, and it turns out that a perfectly tuned, one-button arcade game doesn't need to be anything more than that.
